Le Fer-à-Cheval

View of Le Fer à Cheval from Le Frénelay Sunday, August 3, 2008

The last time we cycled to this region was to watch the 5th stage of this year's Dauphiné Libéré race (link). We had ridden as far as Samoëns and climbed the Col de Joux Plane from there. Today we continued further along the main road to Le Fer-à-Cheval. Here, surrounded by the imposing Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval, is where the valley comes to an abrupt end.

After all the climbs we have done this year, the 6.5 km up from the ski town of Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval was easy. Feeling strong, we overtook a couple of race cyclists on the way up.

For the return, we took a different but equally busy road from Samoëns to Taninges. After a brief stop in Taninges where the classic auto show was taking place, we linked up to our original road for Geneva.
