Col de la Cayolle is a favorite of mine. I only know the north gorge side, and can imagine the other side is HOT.
On the Tour d'Enfer Doreen got stranded 3 kms from the top with an unfixable flat and a busted spare valve - at least 15 cyclists tried to help, but she had different tires than all the roadies.
I had to ride back and get the car as a storm approached - for once I descended quickly :)
